Two words: “Expert and informal”
Ran Haase
Legal advisor civil law, Municipality of Eindhoven
“STIJL Advocaten has given us good advice within Strijp-S on the establishment of a heat and cold power plant; a complex story with all kinds of corporate challenges.
Lately, cooperation has been strongly focused on innovative projects in our dynamic city. STIJL Advocaten goes a step further than traditional area development and really focuses on innovation and the ‘city of the future’.
An example is the ‘smart lighting grid’, an innovative lighting project in which the public lighting in Eindhoven is upgraded to a smart lighting grid. Another example is the smart sustainability of a number of municipal buildings in the municipality of Eindhoven, where STIJL Advocaten supports us legally. Another example: the Cure project in which an innovative waste processing plant is being built with an innovation platform linked to it.
I would like to describe the cooperation with STIJL Advocaten in two words: expert and informal. Expert in the broadest sense of the word: not only legally, but also in terms of negotiating skills and financial insight; they know how the hares run. Informal: accessible; we can always call each other, even on weekends….”.
‘Stijl is a rather small but very agile working law firm. It either has all the competences needed directly or within their direct reach and can deliver a high quality and to-the-point answer for several legal issues. ‘

“STIJL understands the dynamics of our profession”
“Exploitation is becoming increasingly important within project development. That means: more stakeholders and therefore: more similarities. You used to have a buy, a sale and a cooperation.
Nowadays you quickly talk about 10 contracts, in a variety of legal areas: corporate law, administrative law or facilities law. You can’t afford not to have knowledge of them. I don’t want a battery of people, but someone who is able to do something in the broad legal field, with back-up in the background. STIJL provides that. STIJL also understands the dynamics of our profession. In a process of six months we have to take a lot of difficult decisions.
STIJL helps us and offers a ready-made step-by-step plan. STIJL is very broadly able to answer legal questions, has enough specialties in house to be able to go into depth and can react very quickly. That is why we have been working with STIJL for a very long time, to our great satisfaction”.

“Not only the legal perspective, but also the project perspective”
Isidoor Hermans
Director Development Company Spoorzone Delft B.V.
“STIJL has helped us by, among other things, bringing the contract for area development to a more demand-driven level. After the crisis had broken out, STIJL assisted Spoorzone Delft in the transformation from supply-driven to demand-driven development.
That happened: to the point, fit for use and our thoughts were sharpened by STIJL. We experience the cooperation as valuable, transparent and open, in which STIJL always highlights different sides of the story.
Not only the legal perspective, but also the project perspective. That is very important for Spoorzone Delft.”
“‘I think we can complement each other very well'”
“STIJL Advocaten is one of the leading law firms when it comes to real estate and urban development and Project Moore is in the field of IT law and privacy. In the field of smart cities, our areas of expertise come together. A smart city is a city that is made more liveable, sustainable and attractive through the use of smart technology, for example by better streamlining traffic based on data about movement patterns. The driving force behind smart cities is data about people and objects. This raises questions about the collection and use of this data, especially now that more and more devices are connected to the internet.
Who collects this data, when is it allowed, and for what purposes may this data be used? Our clients want to respond to the opportunities offered by smart cities, but also to these questions. Think of a municipality that wants to include privacy aspects in a tender procedure for smart lampposts with various sensors.”

“STIJL thinks with you, but also thinks one step further”
Arjan de Hek
Area Manager CAF
“I got to know STIJL very well myself in 2012. At that time, we were busy with the tendering procedure for new trains at the Dutch Railways. That was a successful process: we obtained the contract. STIJL was involved in the tender procedure from the very beginning.
The main emphasis was on: is the procedure right? What struck me is that STIJL thinks along with you, but also thinks one step further. This is how we judge it today, but this could be the consequences for the future. After the pre-qualification phase the offer followed and STIJL’s role then became more substantive: what are the contract conditions, what does the contract look like, legally and commercially?
STIJL is, of course, thinking legally – which clauses are in line with the legal framework and, above all, the European framework? But STIJL also thinks commercially: ‘pay attention to this because you could benefit commercially from it’. What I also appreciate is that STIJL takes the trouble to study the technology of trains and trams and to learn the jargon. All in all, very pleasant to work with”.

‘One of their strengths is that they work as a team. Each individual lawyer has several legal specialties. The contact/communication with us as clients is informal in a very pleasant way and the advice is to the point.’
“They are straightforward people without fuss and that suits us well”
“Our cooperation with STIJL started in 2012 with a change in a zoning plan which we did not fully agree with and in which we also wanted to have a bit of extension. At that time we were already doing business with STIJL for some time. Then all kinds of other things came out of it and recently we submitted another case to STIJL, so that says it all.
Think for example of views against a zoning plan or support for routes that have to be followed in redevelopment or extension of an object. STIJL offers a very broad knowledge and experience in the field of spatial planning. That is a pleasant way of switching. They are good at the subject matter and have contacts all over the country that they can use in procedures. They are straightforward people without fuss and that suits us well. And if something can’t be done, they say so honestly”.

“Informal, open and hands-on”
Els van der Riet
Lawyer at Ontwikkelingsbedrijf Spoorzone Delft B.V.
“Our collaboration with STIJL Advocaten dates back to 2008, but we knew Truke from when she was a young lawyer and worked on the first agreements for the Spoorzone Delft project, the agreements with the State and with ProRail in 2005. In 2008 we had reached the point in Delft that we wanted to distribute the risks better.
A colleague advised me to use STIJL. They had a good impression of STIJL’s Advocaten. We worked together intensively for a couple of weeks to adjust two major contracts and STIJL did that very well. The risks were then split into a rail and a city district.
STIJL’s people are informal, open and hands-on. They can take a step back and sketch the whole picture: ‘Think here and there; what can happen and what do you do?’ “An excellent cooperation, with a very good result.”
